How Does Compensation Vary by Region?

In March’s Thelander Digest, we examine how median total cash compensation varies across the US for managing general partners and senior associates. The data presented is collected from the Thelander-PitchBook Investment Firm Compensation Survey, which is now open-year round. There are two charts below:

  1. Managing General Partner Median Total Cash, Venture Capital, Less than $1 Billion in total AUM
  2. Senior Associate Median Total Cash, Venture Capital, $1 Billion + in total AUM
Managing General Partner Median Total Cash

By examining the Thelander data above for managing general partners, we see that:

  • Those who work at a VC firm with less than $1 billion dollars in total AUM are compensated the highest in Northern California region at $500,000.
  • Managing general partners in the Mid Atlantic region were compensated the second highest with $431,250.

Senior Associate Median Total Cash

By examining the Thelander data above for senior associates, we see that:

  • Those who work at an investment firm with more than $1 billion in total AUM are compensated extremely competitively across the US. Whether a senior associate is located in Northern CA, Southern CA, Mountain, Southwest, or Southeast regions, the median total cash is $250,000 for all of them.
  • The highest paid region is Northeast at $307,500.
  • TAKEAWAY: This is an extremely competitive talent pool, regardless of where you are located.

After reviewing our data from the chart above, we found that total AUM makes the largest difference in compensation rather than region. You can accommodate for cost of living adjustments by using the percentiles on the compensation data tables as well as the region filters in the Thelander platform.
