Thelander IF Digest: November 2022
How Do Bonuses Impact Compensation for Managing Directors/Partners and Senior Associates?
We received a lot of interest in last month’s Thelander Digest where we explored how bonus programs impact the total compensation for managing general partners. So this month, we’re exploring the same thing for Managing Directors/Partners and Senior Associates.
For all of these positions, their total cash compensation may be just their base salary, while others also receive a bonus as well. This doesn’t necessarily mean that those with bonuses get paid more. Those without bonuses might have a higher base salary to make up for the difference.
So which is it? Let’s dive in!

Thelander Key Takeaways:
- At all AUM levels, managing directors/partners were compensated substantially higher when they received a bonus, with the most pronounced difference at firms with $1 billion or more AUM.
- As firms have more AUM, the percentage of managing directors/partners who received a bonus increased.
