How is the CVC Hiring and Retention Landscape Changing?

In July’s Thelander Digest, we examine how the CVC hiring and retention landscape is changing. Particularly, we focus on where new CVC hires are coming from and where CVC employees are going when they leave?

First, let’s look at where new hires are coming from.

From what types of organizations did new hires come from?

Thelander data indicates:

  • The percentage of CVC units hiring new recruits from other CVC units, VC firms, and Graduate School have been increasing consistently since 2019.
  • The percentage hiring new recruits from consulting firms is also up since 2019, although it decreased slightly from 2020 to 2021.
  • While private companies are still the third most popular source for new hires, the percentage has been decreasing consistently since 2019.

Now, let’s look at where CVC employees are going when they leave.

Where di the senior professional or key recruit go?

Our data shows:

  • While VC firms and other CVC units are still the organizations where the largest percentages of CVC employees are leaving to, the percentage has dropped since 2019 for both.
  • The percentage losing senior professionals or key recruits to other positions in their parent company has also decreased.
  • Meanwhile, the percentage of CVC units losing senior professionals and key recruits to PE/Growth firms, private companies, and public companies have all increased over the same period.
